Bansko Blog is now live at www.banskoblog.com. After a survey of existing subscribers, the new site is designed to deliver the information anyone interested in Bansko will need.

After 80 posts here, site visitors had steadily climbed to such an extent that a new site with web cams, advanced search facility was required. What's more I needed an easier to read text - so new site has black on white text.

Still snowing fall in Bansko which now means almost guaranteed perfect ski conditions for at least the next week. Should be perfect for the Women's Slalom event next weekend.

Well I have been enjoying sunny Britain. Today was just beautiful and, a tenuous connection with Bansko, meant that I could get my paraglider out and go flying. Wonderful thermals up to around 1,300 feet (400 metres approx) and fine views. See picture taken just a few hours ago.

I even managed to find time to take a short video. see below.

Which brings me to paragliding in Bansko. If you fancy a tandem flight its something well worth doing. I know several of the Bulgarian tandem guys and I would have no hesitation recommending them. However I have to add that not all ski insurance policies automatically cover tandem paragliding flights.

Bansko got some good publicity for its cost in the UK press this weekend. But I have to point out that Bansko has more than its fair share of traps for the unwary.

One reader mentioned I was a little negative when reporting on the traps. Saying that other places are the same. Problem is yes a few are, I agree. But I would prefer that we all avoid the traps and that visitors get a realistic view of Bansko rather than marketing spin. but thanks point taken!

Read on to see how this question got me thinking. And how renting may be the way forward to sell property - not just in Bansko, but any overseas property.

Why Not Try Before You Buy?

When I was in the market for a new car, a good few years back, I undertook the following process. I looked at the internet, read the specifications, ordered a few glossy brochures.

But I still didn’t do anything.

Then I arranged a test drive of the two types of car I wanted to buy. This was when the real fun came. The Toyota dealer just took my drivers licence and let me go and play on the country roads. Well if I was uncertain then, I was completely convinced now.

It was the Celica for me, and the decision to buy urgently was made.

What Went Right, And What Went Wrong

Now, I was pretty ecstatic and was looking to place my order. I had armed myself with internet prices, imports from Holland etc. The problem was my local dealership couldn’t get the price close to their competition.

Why was I going to spend over £3,000 more for the pleasure of buying locally? They all come from the same factory and had near identical spec. So the test drive worked well because I bought the Celica. But it went wrong for the dealer because he didn’t get my business - except for many years of servicing.

Property Sales: Rent Before You Buy

So it occurred to me how sensible it is for owners to rent their property when resales are very competitive. If they are looking to sell sometime in the future, then this is a strategy I recommend. This is because they can most effectively market to people when they are at their most receptive to buying the lifestyle. When they are relaxed and on holiday.

I would therefore advise those who are not sure about renting to think about it, and think about taking control of the process.

Alberto Tomba and Balkaniada Shut Due To World Cup

Rain and above freezing temperatures come to Bansko.

Temperatures will drop this week but ski and board visitors may be a little disappointed to see some of the best runs, nine and four closed until end of February.

I maintain that the month of March from around the 5th or so, is a great time to come out to Bansko. Most runs will be open - assuming temperatures remain low.

There is no doubt that whilst the Alps have had the best year for probably fifteen years, Bansko is having an average year so far.

But we all know that weather changes and my bet is that, as almost always, Bansko sees some perfect snow conditions during the months of March and April.

Budget conscious skiers are discovering the joys of Bansko. But, and I don't want to preach, I'm still hearing many tales of both regulars and new visitors alike getting ripped off.

A quick thank you to all subscribers for their feedback to the survey. Already the plans have changed and that is a a good thing.

Bansko Ski Conditions

Bansko ski conditions have been good in the morning but snow has been getting heavy due to the warmer temperatures than expected at this time of the year.

Not the best - and not as good as the Alps this year. 135cm of snow on upper slopes is still fine. Many visitors are reported to be very happy with conditions.

But for so many visitors I am missing the point talking about snow. A mixture of adequate skiing, modern lifts, great nightlife, varied and affordable restaurant scene, spacious accommodation makes Bansko a compelling offering in these economic times.

Bansko is more than the sum of its parts. That's why more experienced skiers enjoy it more than they should.

Property owners are making an increasing number of our subscribers, and the redesigned website will have an owners area with free sample contract download. This will be sent to all subscribers in a few weeks.

Advance warning for owners.

The new web site will have a rental section with a difference.

Back to the pistes...Too many runs are closed in preparation for events. If I was choosing a time to go to Bansko - then I suggest leaving it until around 7th March. Oh for the curse of school holidays!

Bansko is a resort under construction, and like everywhere in the world there are huge environmental assessments to be made before extending the ski terrain. I reckon they will get there with more lifts - but this is a decision that goes way beyond local government decision making.

For now, its an affordable resort to visit. Nirvana will never exist - but there this year reports are more upbeat than last year. Great boarding and skiing to be had - on a nice and new lift system on some truly satisfying terrain. And no longer quite the building site of last year.

Probably the most demanding of clinets are the regulars, the owners and those with vested interests. We all wish Bansko well. But this is the place where I say how I see it. My view changes but most of all the desire is to get the best value, Tomorrow I will give pass on a tip in the Banso guide for subscribers. This tip has just saved a reader a whole load of cash. An interesting point for me, was that we had so few people from Bulgaria entering. On enquiring why, it appears many believe most competitions are fixed or corrupt and many thought "where's the catch?". The video proves there is no catch.

The draw was totally random.

I hope this goes some way to change attitudes from the many Bulgarian visitors to this site.

Anyhow, back to the Burns night supper. None of us were Scottish except Lynne, a snowboarder and apartment owner from Glasgow who joined us for the evening with Ed (an American ski enthusiast living in China). She refused my accompanying red wine gravy (or as I prefer, my 'jus') in accordance with Burns Night tradition. No offense taken, Lynne.

Bansko Gets St Moritz Ladies Downhill On 27th Feb

The canceled ladies downhill from St. Moritz has been rescheduled today to Bansko (BUL) and will take place on Friday, Feb. 27th at 12:00 LOC (11:00 CET).

Training runs at both Kitzbuel and Cortina were canceled this morning, both due to falling snow. Organizers later extended the cancellations through tomorrow.

At Cortina there were 25inches on the ground at 6:30 am, with forecasts calling for another 25, prompting the cancellation of Thursday’s super G.

More information regarding rescheduling the super G will be announced on Thursday. Friday and Saturday's downhills, as well as Sunday's giant slalom will take place as scheduled.

At Kitzbuel officials made the call about 9:30. Racers were out for inspection but it was snowing too heavily to get the training run in.

8 Million Euros For Bansko's Infrastructure

Bansko plans to invest 15 million leva (around 7.7 million euro) in infrastructure this year, according to the municipality’s updated plan.

By the end of 2009, the funds will cover the completion of the road between the resort town and the Vihren mountain cabin, as well as the infrastructure of the new parts of the resort – Gramadeto and Asanitsa, the town’s mayor Aleksandar Kravarov told the Bulgarian newspaper Dnevnik.

“At these places there aren’t even sidewalks yet, and that is why we are making this issue a priority,” Kravarov noted, adding that the resort’s streets will also be fully paved.

The Bansko municipality also plans to construct a 3.2-kilometre summer biathlon run in the area of Banderishka Polyana – the starting point of many of the lifts to the slopes. “Our aim is in 2010 to host the Summer Biathlon World Championship,” Kravarov commented. This would be the second largest sports meeting at the resort, after the Alpine Ski World Cup for women takes place there between February 28 and March 1 of this year.

Early indications point to visitor numbers up by around 8% from last year.

My comment to day on this news is that the change in Bansko has surprised many visitors this year. It feels like there has been a spring clean compared to last year. Many more new roads and pavements and facilities have gone in.

This extra investment on roads and pavements will help put firmly to bed the historic "building site" reputation, the resort had gained.

It is also worth pointing out that Bansko is totally unaffected by the gas supply issues - as there is no natural gas pipe to Bansko and therefore all power supplies are secure. The resort has functioned with the increase in visitors remarkably well.

In particular the new one way system into and out of the gondola parking has been a success. And the additional facilities to host the summer biathlon championship in 2010 is another positive step.

However not all is positive! This season has brought out restaurant touts, supermarket overcharging and therefore places to avoid.

The Victoria Restaurant In Bansko

The Victoria is situated opposite the Kempinski on Pirin Street. Another new restaurant for the season and this place is set to be one of the most popular.

Victoria is part of a chain and having eaten here in Sofia, I was keen to get back initial reviews.

And they're positive.

If you fancy Italian and you are in this part of town or have children and need an early meal this is the place to seriously consider coming. The prices are very reasonable with a large 500ml beer at 2.5 Lev (€1.5 approx).

With a very nicely finished interior and friendly service, the Victoria is a welcome addition to the ever expanding Bansko restaurant scene.

A Bansko Mehana To Avoid; Vecelo Celo

Bansko Mehanas are full of traps for the unwary this year. Vecelo Celo is one to avoid. I need to warn everyone about this place on the traffic lights, just before the gondola - on the corner.

You won't miss it, as here's a picture of it above and here's another below.

Reports of excessive charging, over priced wine and indifferent service have come in.

From the outside it looks good. But don't be tempted to wander inside. There are many other great places I'll be reviewing over the next few weeks.

2. Method Snow School. Tel: +359 24 900 966 www.methodsnowschool.com . £150 for three hours. Expensive - but feedback is positive. Also equipment hire.

3. Ulen Ski School. The biggest by far. Variable quality of instruction. Some instructors very good indeed. Just go to gondola lift. Also hire in the gondola - but not a pleasant experience.

I once did this and found the service poor and the whole process all too hectic.

The Crown Inn, Bansko

The Crown Inn, Bansko is one of many new bars, restaurants, shops and clubs that have started business for this season.

The crown is liked for its Stolichno dark strong beer on draft as well as its resident band two piece band that does a great job in getting the atmosphere about right.

You'll see next door to the main bar there is pool and darts - so no surprising you are going to hear many English accents here!

Praise has been mixed for the food, but the burgers are sound.

But not all is good everywhere and what was good last year we are finding can be terrible this year.

Bansko Blog Celebrates Record Viewings

Bansko Blog hits its target of over 200 page views in one day.

With 64 visitors yesterday, this web site broke the 60 visitor per day target early. Read on for why this could be good news for you.

In just six weeks the site has not only grown, but has seen people reading, watching and listening to more and more as the content expands.

Visitors from 51 countries are represented here. Bansko Blog readership stretches around the world. The Top 12 countries are:

The Happy End Rocks Bansko

The Happy End Bar in Bansko rocked with the sounds of awake on Friday. Click play above to hear their rendition of "Paint It Black" from the Stones.

The Happy End Bar could be an obvious place to avoid - being situated opposite the gondola. But as reported here before, it may just be the best music night out you'll have in Bansko.

If you like rock in the form of Led Zep, Stones, Hendrix. And grunge, like Nirvana then you won't be disappointed. Awake not only performed the well known standards, but also play their own music - which was rather good. I can see why they received the BG Radio Award (www.pacific-studio.net for all the the band's history) and are busy touring not just Bulgaria but Europe as well.

As for the Happy End - It's best on a Friday and Saturday night to see a live band. There are usually a number of different live acts during the ski season. So do comment if you have seen other bands that impressed.

Expect mediocre food at inflated prices. The Happy End "sache" (mixed grill) is okay and be sure to look at the weight in grammes of the food. Often one dish will serve three people.

Service can be of the non smiling variety - but our waitress was rather good this time. More reports please.

With a DJ who keeps the atmosphere and dancing going during the break, and dancers to add that extra "something" be prepared to enjoy a great night.

Unbiased Bansko information is always good. But it is now a necessity here, because the tourist scene has changed so much in just one year.

Caution In The Mehanas

Many traditional mehanas and restaurants are attempting to charge inflated prices. My New Year hope is that we avoid the Black Sea sharks*. They are easy to ignore by following an old simple rule:

If someone is trying to get you in, then you could end up hoping to get out - fast.

Good places, generally, do not need to employ people to persuade you to enter. Often the better places are full of locals, who pay close attention to price, or with visitors who know. The best places get booked up.

The current mehana problem has arisen due to owners finding it an easier money making proposition to rent their traditional mehanas (tavern style restaurants). Typically the operators are the Sunny Beach/Black Sea restaurateurs - rather than owners. Many are not family owned and run any longer. So what was good last year, may well not be in 2009.

The only way to stop this, is for visitors to avoid these type of places. Demand and supply will then make the relevant price and quality adjustments. Bansko Changes For 2009

From ski/board hire, lessons, entertainment, accommodation, transfers, shopping... its all changing at a fast pace.

Many of the Bansko changes are very positive.

Today, I think most people would agree that the previous building site feel is much less in evidence. The facilities, accommodation, bars, restaurants and general choice are improved. Even service standards are better as we enter 2009.

Accidents In Bansko

Take care out the mountain. I ski first thing in the morning but, as it get busier on rather thin snow with some rocks now showing, its worth being realistic about our abilities.

And here's why.

I met up with the doctor, in a kind of unplanned way, in the Medical Centre situated in the Bansko Gondola station. Entrance is on the west side of the building.

The doctor and his team have been very busy. Even by lunchtime last Saturday, there were three broken arms, one dislocated shoulder, cracked rib and broken nose (my son) and that's only what he has dealt with.

But all this was before the prime time, four o'clock, accident rush.

The "one more last run of the day", tired, out of practice, on ice, on busy slopes, will deliver to the Medical Centre a load more injuries. In fact some patients of The Medical Centre are not skiers - just slipping on icy pavements is a trap for all.

The Medical Centre is well equipped with X ray, and the doctors and nursing staff deliver excellent care. However, it's not a hospital.

You go to Razlog for this. And you may wish you never have visited this hospital.

A Bansko hospital is a few years away, or so I'm told.

In early 2009, I will examine what exactly the Bankso lift pass insurance covers you for.

Insurance is automatically included in your lift pass price. But make sure you have full winter sports cover, as you will not be covered for extensive search and rescue and medical treatment. Nor for repatriation which was being undertaken for a man who had badly fractured his hip last week. This required transfer to Sofia, nurse flown out and special flight back to the UK. Expensive stuff.

What To Do In Bansko When Its Busy

The slopes are icy right now, especially later on in the day. If you don't already, how about wearing a helmet?

Be early for the lift. Avoid the queues. The picture above showing gondola lift queue, was taken on Monday 29th December at midday.

But how about taking the blue run down to Chalin Valog?

If you are a competent rider / skier then enjoy the deserted black run shown above. No queue for lift. The picture above was taken Monday 29th Dec 2008.

No amount of the excellent snow making in Bansko, makes up for the shortage of early season snow. More is on its way. In the meantime please take care.

Bansko For Non Skiers Or Boarders

Many visitors come to the mountains to relax and enjoy the ambiance of an old mountain town, to party or, lie today, just to spend the New Year with good friends and family.

Bansko delivers this better than ever before. The view of the main Pirin street above and below was taken on Monday.

The ice skating ring, near the Strazhite Hotel and Mountain Residence 3, is popular and is surely another great way to get that feel good feeling before the New Year celebrations.

The recent fine weather has made for some nice views, so I'll sign off 2008 with this mountain view.

It icy in the afternoon. Skiers are advised to ski early and take care later in the day.

Pistes are getting busy and mixed with ice accidents are more likely.

Bansko ski conditions saw some icy conditions today. Still only four lifts open. See video of the icy top half of the Tomba run and my Christmas Greetings to all readers.

Some queues were around 20 minutes as the picture above shows.

Many visitors come to Bansko for the atmosphere, food and some fresh air. However keen skiers are likely to be disappointed over the next few days. Although light snow is forecast every day for the next four days, it is unclear at this stage whether these will transpire to be the big dump needed to ensure the resort is fully open.

The run down to Bansko is fully open and was pleasant in the sunshine. Impressive snow making coverage has made this possible.

Looks like today's high winds will subside. It will remain very cold.

But I was glad for all the thermal underwear today Inner gloves saved my fingers

Bansko Ski Conditions

Bansko Ski Conditions. Report from today on the piste.

The snow is okay, but is mainly artificial. The picture here was taken just a few hours ago and you can see there is snow..

BUT only 5 lifts are open and there is an expectation of snow tonight.

Not a great start to the season but temperatures are now low. And its getting colder.

There is now a light dusting of snow in Bansko and this should mean tomorrow, Christmas Eve there should be more snow on the runs and, with luck, more lifts open. Wind speeds remain high though.

No queues at gondola today and beautiful sunshine. Tomba was open but some queues for about 10 minutes. Well there were only 4 lifts + baby lift + gondola open.

Does Bansko Have A Curry Or Indian Restaurant?

A dedicated Indian restaurant to satisfy Bansko curry cravings does not yet exist. No worries. Avalon hotel does have curry nights most weeks. But should you get a "curry-on" at any time - your problem is now solved.

Well give it a go. Its really simple and nothing needs accurate measuring.

After a day out on the snow what could be more enjoyable than a curry? A good curry tastes like heaven after a hard day's boarding or skiing.

Please comment if you can help me on Indian spices and herbs being sourced in Sofia, Blagoevgrad or even Bansko. In the meantime you will need to bring over some of the spices from home.

You may well save some cash too but this recipe is for taste, not economy.

For Lance's Bansko Curry you need:

1 x onion
1 x leek
fresh ginger
2 x garlic
chillies (to taste) more the better of course. chilli powder
Turmeric
coriander seed (best to grind your own with pestle and mortar - but whatever)
garam masala (if possible but not essential)
cumin Seed (fairly essential)
black pepper
tomato puree
vegetable stock
1 x lemon
yogurt
cucumber
chicken / meat / fish / prawns
vegetables: leek, peas, courgettes

Instructions:

Take your finely chopped 1 x onion
1 x chopped leek
fresh root ginger (powder sold in Bansko supermarket)
2 x garlic
chillies (to taste) more the better of course and/or chili powder

then cook this lot very slowly in big wok or pot for 20 mins

add chicken/ beef/lamb/pork or just vegetables

if you have some Kaffir Lime leaves add them. Add lemon grass if you have. Neither essential.

ADD Spices as follows:

Turmeric
Coriander seed (best to grind your own with pestle and mortar - but whatever)
Garam Masala (if possible but not essential)
Cumin Seed (fairly essential)
Black Pepper

Add vegetable stock (500ml enough for 4 people)
a little tomato puree (not essential)
add 2 teaspoons of sugar

if you like a "one pot curry" add favourite vegetables (any.. okra, leeks, courgettes, peas, broccoli)

put lid on pot.

Cook very slowly for an hour for chicken on bone (40 minutes if not on bone). 1 hour plus hours for lamb/beef.

at end of cooking add more vegetables mushrooms (15 minutes) and spinach (5 minutes)

Add coconut milk if you have it. A little Thai Fish Sauce is also good.

Serve with basmati rice and yogurt with cucumber and, if possible, mint.. best to make this whilst the curry is cooking. The yogurt thickens up the thin sauce.

Just before serving add a lot of fresh coriander. Squeeze lemon juice in the pot.

Serve with a few coriander leaves, Mrs Balls chutney, your yogurt mix and accompany with a cool beer....

variations: add (Puy) Lentils for a lush lentil curry.

Make separate vegetable curry. add small new potatoes.

Make a large batch then freeze as its even better the next day or out of the freezer.

George, a Bansko Blog reader from the UK, has now tried Bulgaria Transport for car hire to Bansko - after reading my Bansko transfer article - as wrote: "I'm as happy as larry with the value for money. I got the lowest price I could find - everything was spot on."

I caught up with Alex outside Terminal 1, Sofia Airport. So if you use the service you'll know who to look out for... although its not always Alex! If you are happy with your transfer or car hire, then please let me know in the comments section below.

Warning! Beware of rogue transfer and hire companies.

Don't risk your life! There are some cars you can hire which are unsafe. You need winter tyres, a motorway ticket. Don't risk a car that is dangerous to drive. There are many cowboy operators out there. Too cheap? Then Be careful.
There are six transfer options to Bansko:

5. take the bus
6. train (not reviewed - takes far too long)

bonus option: fly to Thessaloniki (Greece) or to Plovdiv (Bulgaria)

"Bansko Express works as a booking agent which gets holiday makers from the same flights and transports them between Sofia Airport and Bansko in one vehicle.

Depending on the number of bookings the vehicles used are cars, shuttle buses, mini-buses and coaches. If you are the only booking for your flight then it would be like a private taxi transfer at a much cheaper price. Whatever type of vehicle used, your journey will be pleasant."

Seems like a great option particularly if you are a small group or alone.

2. Private Transfer:

The most common way for skiers to get to Bansko from Sofia, unless you have booked on a package trip.

Here are my recommended transfer companies. There is competition. So here are seven to choose from.

3. Taxi

www.oktaxi.net - I have used OK taxis several times. And its not a bad option - well, its just okay!

They are the official yellow taxis outside airport. If you're up for some hard bargaining remember its just one way, so start at €50/100 lev. Try and pay €80/160 lev. Let me know how you got on.

If you were last minute and all other options failed. Or you just forgot to book.

All is not lost. OK Taxis (Supertrans) will get you there. Try and pick and English speaking driver.

Very poor boot (trunk) space for your baggage. There is a large gas bottle in the boot.

There is now lots of hire car competition and prices have come down.

Hiring a car is a good option once you have been once to Bansko - or are used to driving abroad. A car will also mean you will save money by driving out of Bansko in the evenings to local restaurants. Often they are over half the price of Pirin street tourist traps.

TOP TIP: Be sure you have a ticket attached to screen for the motorways outside Sofia. Do check you have winter tyres attached and that the windscreen fluid is full.

Carry your driving licence. Be very careful to obey speed limits.

Police (Kat): The time spent stopped by police makes it a waste of time speeding. Be sure you have a road legal vehicle. Don't drink and drive. Winter tyres are essential.

5. Take the Bus

Why not take the bus? Save the environment and save cash. This is cheap, about 14 lev (7 euros approx) each way. It will take longer though.

Go to Central Bus Station, Sofia for timetable (its in English).

Be warned, this will take time as you have to get to Central Bus Station. Best may be to use Ovcha Kupel bus station. But at least its on the right side of town. You will need to check these times.

6. Train

Here's the link for the timetable: http://www.bdz.bg/ . Go to central train station. Change of trains is required. It will take you seven hours. Take a good book.

Thessaloniki option

Fly to Thessaloniki, hire a car and drive to Bansko from Greece. Car hire costs more and its a bit further but getting out of Sofia at busy times makes this an option to consider especially if you fancy time exploring Greece.

When I went to Thessaloniki I really enjoyed the atmosphere. Great bars and restaurants and really different from Bulgaria. Be prepared for drinks prices that are equal to, if not more, than London, Paris, Dublin etc.

Quality is high, however, and the weather is almost always warmer than Bulgaria.

Brilliantine Goes Retro For Students Day In Bansko

Yes Brilliantine night club at the Lion Hotel Bansko was the place to meet, drink, dance and, for some, to be seen in. So it was the venue I just had to check up for this students' day special review.

Brilliantine is one popular Bansko late night spot to visit in the run up to Bulgaria's famous 8th December annual students day. However, Sofia's Brilliantine bar and club is best known for its often exclusive, and demanding, door policy in Battenberg Square (3 Moskovska Street) in Sofia.

Bansko's Brilliantine is located underneath the Lion Hotel and is a smaller, but nonetheless smart, destination for Bansko's late night party goers.

They say, "if you feel too old, you are too old." But after a while it didn't seem to matter to me. And Friday saw this blog receive viewers from 40 countries, since I installed a counter three weeks ago. So it was time to celebrate this little milestone achievement.

Back to Brilliantine. It's true to say retro music is more widely appreciated by Bulgarians than many other countries. Words for 80's favourites from "Right Said Fred", "Queen" and "Duran Duran" seemed to be universally known.

In Brilliantine, be prepared to pay 10 lev for a drink. As I will reveal in later posts, these sort of prices can now be charged by some of the other, and less upscale establishments. On Saturday night party folk were queuing up to get in at 4.00am - just as we were were leaving the club. So I assume it didn't really get going until about 12:30 ish.

The students day build up in Bansko started Friday the 5th, and continued until departure today. What strikes me, is that the spectacle is the opposite of, not only what you may expect of impoverished credit crunch students, but also of a country whose official average income is about €400 per month!

German car marques such as BMW x5's, Audi Cayenne, and even a few Porsches, demonstrated how the offspring of Bulgaria's 200,000 millionaires like to flash their cash. Like their parents - so conspicuous student wealth abounds.

Dressed in the finest gear you may have been forgiven you were looking at a modeling convention. Why is it Bulgarian students look so different than the spotty, greasy and somewhat rough look I remember from my days?

So there we go - a perfect opportunity to see Bansko at its designer finest. New gear for the girls, and smart new jackets for the guys seemed to be the order of the day and night. Bansko needs a good crowd to fill its venues and the 8th December is one to put in the diary for next year.

Poor skiing conditions at the weekend meant there were not so many bright ski outfits to interfere with the dressed up students during the daytime parade in the old town. A snow storm came in on Sunday - so things are looking up for the ski season.

How To Book Rooms In Bansko Part 1

Well booking a Bansko room cant be hard, can it not? Sometimes the whole job feels like pulling teeth.

Time spent surfing the web, checking availability, checking whether 100 metres to gondola means 1,000 metres, and so on. It can be a painful process.

But like an American burger joint, sometimes there can be just too much choice. Bansko has loads of room options. Don't be a monkey. Read on for my guide on how to successfully find and book the room that satisfies all your requirements.

Quick Economics Lesson

But before I do this, here is my reminder of some school economics.

The world is going through its seismic changes for really one fundamental reason. There is an excess of supply over demand.

This is the real cause, not greedy bankers or government failings. This is the reason millions of people are losing their jobs right now. There is too much supply.

However here is the good news.

When supply increases beyond demand, prices fall. So what has this got to do with booking a room in Bansko? Well, everything really.

Construction Boom and Supply

Over the past six years the huge demand for investment property, primarily from English and Irish investors. It lead to a huge building spree. Whilst many were surprised that so many building licences were granted, the fact is, there are now around 15,000 apartments and studios in Bansko.

Assuming some two and three bedroom apartments, its a fair assumption that there is accommodation, including hotel rooms, for well over 35,000 people in the Razlog Valley.

Well there would be, if they were all available to rent. Some owners don't want to rent, don't want to furnish and some think they can't be bothered to rent out at low rents.

Okay, the message is clear, Bansko now has a huge supply of rooms.

Nobody knows the exact amount of rooms to be supplied - but there seems to be a consensus of this number. So its as good a guess as any.

Factor on the Demand

The next thing to consider is demand. Sometimes relative demand is easy to determine. For example, demand is lot higher over New Year than mid January. But what you need to know is that, whatever time of year, you should be booking your accommodation, or room, at the very lowest price that satisfies your needs.

Prices vary from around five euros to over two hundred euros per night - so you can see this is more complicated than you might believe! There are fabulous prices available out there that many hotels don't want you to know about. More of this next time.

Factors to consider and try and prioritise:

Decide how many there are in your group or family, are there young children?
Decide what you really like. e.g luxury hotel with swimming pool spa, home style, space?
If you are skiing , is being a few minutes walk from gondola an essential requirement?
Do you like to able to walk into the town?
Do you like a chalet atmosphere?
Do you like to stay in?
Do you need to work in your room?
Are you organising a group?
Are you organising a school or society trip?
Are you looking to feel part of a the local scene?

Depending on your answers here, you now need to find the right accommodation that satisfies almost all of your requirements. For the lowest price.

Bansko Blog Forecasts Increase In Greek Visitors To Bansko

Greek skiers and snowboarders are surfing the web for Bankso accommodation bargains. There are early signs of Greeks planning even more trips to Bansko than last season.

This Bansko Blog has seen Greek web surfers, second only to UK surfers, and in recent weeks an increase in room enquiries.

In previous years, there were complaints that the resort was too much of a building site. But this year many of the buildings and roads are finished. But is this the reason?

Prices Down

My guess is that the increase in demand is down to low Bulgaria prices.

Euros in pockets mean that Bansko offers Greeks accommodation often priced in GB Pounds due to the many UK property owners. This means that often rooms are over 20% cheaper than last year. With so many rooms in Bansko - shopping around on the net is making a ski break more affordable than staying in Greece!

Then of course those Bulgarian Levs mean cheaper in resort drinks and food compared to a typical Greek resort.

Bankso's Reputation

Some Greek web surfers reported that they view Bansko as a resort only now ready to offer quality facilities. They have heard that the huge construction site feel is now largely historic and much more of the resort feels ready.

With televised ladies super G from Bansko, there is positive news. Much needed amongst the sea of gloom right now.

Bansko Ski Season Opening

The official opening of the Bansko ski season will take place on Saturday, 29th of November. World famous skiers will show their skills on “Alberto Tomba” ski slope. (www.visitbulgaria.net)

The olympic champions Hanni Wenzel and Andreas Wenzel, the world downhill champion Harti Weirather, the Italian ski legend Gustavo Thoeni and the multiple winner of the World Cup, Marc Girardelli will be the participants in the ski demonstrations.

The show of the masters will start at 12.30. The festival program will go on at 4.00pm with a concert of Romanetsa and Enchev, and the stars from Music Idol ІІ – Nora, Toma, Yasen and Denitsa. The stage will be situated next to the first station of the cabin lift.

I was born in 1965 in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, UK.

My parents, originally from the south of England, moved up to Huddersfield in West Yorkshire in the 50’s so my father could be near work.

I'm the youngest of four children, and fortunate to be have been taken on family ski holidays from such a young age.

But less lucky with the "hand me down" ski clothes!

My father got the skiing bug. So our week abroad was in the winter, usually Easter, for a weeks skiing.

My first skiing experience was in Obergurgl, Austria – aged 5. Leather lace up boots, with ankle moving technique, is a world I remember. A far cry from the carving skis and boards we enjoy today.

Not long after came those high plastic boots, sure to bruise your shins to painful blue. Some of you may recall these days. Ski clothing was just ski pants, goggles and socks. The quilted thin everyday anoraks seemed perfectly okay for Easter temperatures, I think.

In the 80's the high street C&A department store sold skiers the bright ski suits. Those days saw our family ski trips working their way around a diverse range of Austrian, Italian and French ski resorts.

My memories of these annual family ski holidays are the finest. And skiing still, for me, often brings back those great memories.

Recently it was the evocative smell of wood fires in the Bansko town that prompted me to remember past trips

But now, like so many others, I enjoy that warm healthy glowing feeling at the end of the day on the slopes. My often aching knees never diminishing the fact that it was all worth it.

Twelve years ago, I started running an annual “lads” ski trip. EasyJet low cost flights from the UK had made this possible. The idea came about as I realised I was quite good at organising others. And that, like me, there were plenty of friends, and friends of friends, wanting something to look forward to after Christmas. It also enabled me to guide opinion on which resort to try.

A long weekend in January was the norm. Resorts close to Geneva airport such as Verbier, Portes Du Soleil resorts of Les Gets, Avoriaz and especially the Chamonix valley were the usual favourites.

It was in Chamonix that off piste skiing was introduced to me by a rather ambitious French ski guide. For the first time in a while, I was getting down stuff I wouldn’t have even dreamt of. That's the beauty of going skiing. You progress.

More recently, I have been having some less than wondrous attempts at snowboarding. The jury is out on this one.

My other main interest is paragliding. Having been flying since 1990. Taking off on a wide range of mountain and hills around the world, including Sopot in Bulgaria. I'm still always checking the weather for a good opportunity to go flying.

Aside from paragliding, I enjoy mountain biking - if I get time.

My work career has been in banking and finance. Mainly management and sales, risk and business development roles.

I worked for divisions of Royal Bank of Scotland for ten years as well as EMC (IT), and GE Capital.

If you’re still with me, then I’ll bring this right up to present. I've been coming to Bansko since 2004 and this blog was borne out of a need to show pictures of my apartment to skiing friends who were looking to go skiing. But they asked me questions, then others did too.

Questions such as how to get there; airport transfers; tuition; crèches; babysitting; lessons, restaurants and accommodation – hotels, chalets, apartments. I also wanted to ensure visitors got the best out of Bansko so I decided to share my experiences of the area and the services I have used on this blob.

I have also been fortunate to travel around Bulgaria at various times of the year and enjoy a great network of fellow skiers and paragliding friends to help. But there has been a lot of trial and error along the way. So, after some positive comments, and also some requests from Bansko property owners to rent their apartment's too, I kept this blog going.

There are many businesses in Bankso visiting this site. Some have asked me to review their services - which I do so when I am able to.

These are recessionary times and, in the same way some of us are adjusting our shopping to Aldi or Lidl budget supermarkets, we are also looking at other cheap ski resorts and summer mountain resorts. Quite simply, we are changing our habits very quickly. We are now motivated to find low prices and value in places we previously would not have considered.

So it the same with skiing destinations, they evolve over time.
Bansko's time has arrived.

Bansko and Bulgaria are perceived as cheap by some. It is quite cheap, especially if you enjoy a drink or two. But my goal is for visitors to return in the belief it offers great value for money.

Bansko does deliver for "price conscious" tourists. That’s often why they came in the first place. But its value and service that brings us back to a place.

Ensuring value is this blogs theme. With visitors arriving from all over Europe, more choice and more facilities will continue to enhance Bansko's unique appeal.

But things can always be better. Bansko changes so I aim to give realistic and timely advice on what I experience, and what I learn. Regular Bansko web sites are often out of date. Here I can pass on those changes quickly.

Expect to see news and reviews on child care, transfers, bars, clubs, events, activities, services, ski lifts. You will also get some guest interviews from residents, tourists and local service providers.

My desire is to see that the tourist comes first. If they come and enjoy the Bansko and Bulgarian experience, then I know they will most likely return again soon.

Will The Bansko Discount Card Save You Money?

Today The Bansko Discount Card is launched. The money saving idea from GS Properties is ready to buy. For Euro 20 (Leva 40), you own your Bansko Discount Card ("BDC").

How much will I save?

Early indications are that, with one Bansko Discount Card covering discounts for two people, is that you will save enough to warrant the purchase of a card for just one week stay in Bansko.

I will do the maths in more detail another day; but if any readers would like a go, then please comment at the end of this post.

How does it work?

After you have purchased the card, you're ready to use it. Just look for the BDC sticker that indicates a participating outlet or advertised on the web sites of hotels, furniture, Bansko transfer companies, activity company and a wide range of Bansko services websites.

The savings seem to be around 10%.

The list is already long (see below). Colin and Duncan tell me the number of participants is growing very rapidly and so far it covers the following things:

How Do I Get My Bansko Transfer?

Are you thinking about your Bansko transfer? You're not alone. This is the second most popular search that brings folks to this Bansko Blog.

Have you ever been left waiting in the icy cold - waiting for transport that never arrived?

Looking desperate like a lost child searching for their mummy? Examining every waiting person - hopefully expecting that they are your taxi transfer.

It then gets late.

So late that you're left with the old man on the night shift for company. And the faint buzzing sound of his floor polishing machine.

He looks up at you, with that look that says he's seen it all before.

Been there? So have I.

Here's how to avoid this experience ever again...

Depending on the number of bookings the vehicles used are cars, shuttle buses, mini-buses and coaches. If you are the only booking for your flight then it would be like a private taxi transfer at a much cheaper price. Whatever type of vehicle used, your journey will be pleasant."

Initial reports have been favourable.

2. Private Transfer:

The most common way for skiers to get to Bansko from Sofia, unless you have booked on a package trip.

Here are my recommended transfer companies. There is competition. So here are six to choose from.

Expect to pay for 1/2 people 138 euros return.
For 3/4 people, 145 euros in total (€74 if just one way, no return)

So that's €36.25 per person return if there is four of you.

3. Taxi

www.oktaxi.net - I have used OK taxis several times. And its not a bad option - well, its just okay!

They are the official yellow taxis outside airport. If you're up for some hard bargaining remember its just one way, so start at €50/100 lev. Try and pay €80/160 lev. Let me know how you got on.

If you were last minute and all other options failed. Or you just forgot to book.

All is not lost. OK Taxis (Supertrans) will get you there. Try and pick and English speaking driver.

Very poor boot (trunk) space for your baggage. There is a large gas bottle in the boot.

4. Hire a Car:

www.autorentbg.com who also provide a very flexible car hire service. Their yellow mini cooper drew admiring glances driving through remote villages.

There is now lots of hire car competition and prices have come down.

Hiring a car is a good option once you have been once to Bansko - or are used to driving abroad.

A car will also mean you will save money by driving out of Bansko in the evenings to local restaurants. Restaurants that are often half the price of Bansko's Pirin street mehana tourist traps.

TOP TIP: Be sure you have a ticket attached to screen for the motorways outside Sofia. Do check you have winter tyres attached and that the windscreen fluid is full.

Carry your driving licence. Be very careful to obey speed limits.

Police (Kat): The time spent stopped by police makes it a waste of time speeding. Be sure you have a road legal vehicle. Don't drink and drive. Winter tyres are essential.

5. Take the Bus

Why not take the bus? Save the environment and save cash. This is cheap, about 14 lev (7 euros approx) each way. It will take longer though.

Go to this site: Central Bus Station - Sofia for timetable (its in English). But here its is as of today from Central Bus Station:

Be warned, this will take time as you have to get to Central Bus Station.

Best to use Ovcha Kupel bus station. But at least its on the right side of town. You will need to check these times.

Sofia Ovcha Kupal Bus Terminal to Bansko - 07:00, 09:20 (not Tues), 10:30, 11:50 (not Sun), 13:05, 13:55, 14:30, 14:40, 15:10, 15:28 (not Tues), 15:55, 16:30, 17:00, 17:30.

Bansko Bus Terminal to Sofia - 05:40, 7:00, 08:40, 13:15, 15:20 (not Tues).

6. Take the train

Thessaloniki option

Fly to Thessaloniki, hire a car and drive to Bansko from Greece. Car hire costs more and its a bit further but getting out of Sofia at busy times makes this an option to consider especially if you fancy time exploring Greece.

I went to Thessaloniki in May 2007 and really enjoyed the atmosphere. Great bars and restaurants and really different from Bulgaria. Be prepared for drinks prices that are equal to, if not more, than London, Paris, Dublin etc.

Quality is high, however, and the weather is almost always warmer than Bulgaria.

Plovdiv Transfer Option

Warm Up For Bansko At The O2

Paul Rodgers and Queen rocked the O2 (formerly Millenium Dome in London) on Friday night. Just a spectacular show.

Brian May and Roger Taylor really looked like they were loving it.

In fact those crowd pleasing Queen tracks make great ipod listening whilst tackling the Tomba run.

Yes a very happy audience, and I was delighted to be amongst the action near the stage. Thanks Spud for organising tickets and to Kipper for his company and photo.

Freddie Mercury sadly missed though.

Anyhow, the point of today's blog, is that this winter the O2 (formerly the Millennium Dome) will open London’s first ever indoor artificial twin ski slope.

From late November to 25 January 09, visitors will be able to ski, snowboard or snow tube at The O2.
The twin slopes, both 45 metres in length will give Londoners the option to learn to ski or snowboard.
Experienced skiers can warm up their ski/snowboard legs before heading to the mountains.
Tubing will also be available.
The Warren Smith Ski Academy will offer top level coaching for all levels at The Slopes.
Ski and Snowboard manufacturers, K2 and Ride, will be supplying the range of skis and snowboards to rent.

Niccy Hallifax, Head of Special Events at The O2, said: ‘The Slopes is a fun and safe way for both experienced skiers and snowboarders to gear themselves up for the real thing or as an introduction for complete beginners. The Slopes are designed for all abilities and the snow tubes are ideal for both small and big kids alike!’

With the whole of the London Piazza themed like a winter resort, The Slopes, along with real snow covered trees and chalet will help create the perfect day out this winter.

A trip to The Slopes could also be combined with a visit to one of The O2’s 26 bars and restaurants, a show in The O2 arena or indigO2, or to see a film at the 11 screen Vue cinema.

Tickets start at £15 per adult per hour (ski/board rental additional £5) and snow tubes £8 per half hour (subject to booking fee).

Looks all set to be a great start to the season. Early snow reports from around the Alps are in. Some resorts already open.

I can't recommend the Kempinski enough. Perfect location, great service and good food along with a world class Spa.

However there ia a price to be paid! A family of four in two rooms can rent an apartment nearby for a whole week for less than two nights in the Kempinski!

International Festival of the Mountain Cinema, Bansko 27th – 30th November 2008

Bansko hosts the International Festival of the Mountaineers Cinema, announced by Natali Petrova, festival organisor.

75 films from five continents, taken from the sea bottom to the Himalayan peaks, will be presented in three halls.

The documentaries show the lifestyle, art and religion of the mountain people, as well as the ecology issues of the planet.

Gustavo Tony (Italy), Borge Ousland (Norway) and others will present some personal collections and prints during their stay in Bansko, ready for the future National Mountaineering Museum.

The international jury, lead by Mariana Evstatieva – Biolcheva will determine the winners of the six prizes in the program.

The program also includes art exhibitions, among which “Bulgaria in Antarktika”, marking the 20th anniversary of the Bulgarian science in the region of the South Pole and etc.

The audience will have the chance to watch six films – “The starts of the winter Olympics on the big screen”. The entrance for all shows is free.

This immaculately furnished, spacious and modern first-floor apartment with balcony in the prestigious Predela complex is one to rent.

Sleeping 6 plus baby, it is ideal for families (cot provided) or groups of friends.

The complex has swimming pool and excellent facilities all in the coveted prime position of a few minutes walk to the main gondola station.

Within walking distance of the historic old town with its traditional stone houses and atmospheric taverns.

This Predela apartment is locally managed by an agent in Bansko who will assist and advise you during your stay.

If you have a group, these can be accommodated as we know other owners in the complex.

The apartment offers central heating throughout and air conditioning in the lounge + additional electric heaters.

There are 2 bedrooms, 1 with double bed and 1 with 2 single beds (flush-fitting, can combine to a double).

Both bedrooms have bedside tables, lamps, mirrors and triple wardrobes so ample storage space. The double bedroom also has a chest of drawers.

A baby cot is available. Additional sleeping accommodation for one or two persons is available in the lounge (see below).

The fully fitted bathroom has bath with overhead shower.

Equipped with a hairdryer for your use.

The open-plan living area with well-equipped fitted kitchen has built-in oven, hob and extractor, fridge-freezer, microwave oven and cafetière.

There are ample supplies of crockery, cutlery and glasses (10-12 of each). An iron and ironing board available.

The living area has a double sofa bed, chair bed, coffee table, TV unit, drawer units, TV (satellite), DVD player (children’s DVDs provided), CD player, extending dining table and chairs for 6 people.

A good selection of family board games and books ensures this is a home from home for you, your friends and family.

The hallway has plenty of coat hooks and a cupboard with hanging space.

There is a storage room with extra coat hooks and washing machine within the apartment.

The balcony is accessible from the lounge and both bedrooms.

Bathroom towels and bedding are all here - just bring own linen for cot.

In common with all apartment on Bansko Blog this is a no smoking apartment.

Welcome packs are available.

Predela has a landscaped garden area and there is parking immediately outside the complex.

There is a large ski locker room within the building.

The bright, south-facing leisure facility has a good sized indoor swimming pool with glass roof structure, Jacuzzi, fitness room, sauna and bar.

Guests at the complex can use the facilities free of charge.

£600 for Xmas, New Year and Feb half-terms

£375 for the 2 weeks from April 3rd

Beds are made up on your arrival and a full clean at the end of your stay is included in the price.

You Don't Have To Be Rich To Stay in Villa Daisy

"That's better I said!" I slowly sat up after experiencing Dani's wonderful massage in Villa Daisy.

Earlier, the spring snow was that powder that glistens in the afternoon sunshine.

Now the exotic incense of Dani's Villa Daisy's massage room was the place to be.

The massage was during my stay last season. This was in the huge top floor three bedroom apartment in the same development.

I'd had some guests that stayed on an extra day and I forgot to check first before just turning up at my own apartment. But no matter, as it meant I could get two apartment reviews in this chalet style building. See h ttp://banskoaccommodation.blogspot.com/2008/09/villa-daisy.html for review.

So I then met Paul from Hale, Manchester way.

Paul's third floor impressive two bedroom apartment awaited.

Spacious bedrooms were just another reason I can give to rent his apartment.

Two Bedroom in Three bedroom Space

Villa Daisy is located in Bansko's Glazne quarter. One to rent if you are, like me, wanting luxury at affordable price.

This is one of those properties you immediately relax in when you arrive.

When Paul agreed to offer his apartment for rental I was delighted. But not just because I knew guests would love its two large bedrooms.

Nor the large bathroom. Or even the smart comfortable furnishings.

But because this is the best two bedroom I have been in so far!

Relax in style

Relaxing round the real log fire. we chatted over a Shumensko beer...

then we met friends for another in the Plan B bar. Lit with candles it was hard to drag ourselves out into the cold night.

But Villa Daisy is a short stroll to the centre of Bansko old town, and its many mehanas, and we soon gathered quite a group for a late night visit to the "Nai Club."

Some apartments are too small to bother with much cooking.

But take a look at this kitchen area - perfect to prepare a meal for family and friends.

Or simply to prepare the apres ski snacks and drinks.

Paul wants you to enjoy this property and its facilities. Like him, I'm sure you will want to return soon.

Jacuzzi, wireless broadband, internet room, underground parking, ski locker and lobby bar complete the facilities.

If You Don't Book Your Bansko Accommodation Now, You'll Hate Yourself...

Credit Crunch 08 is in full swing - are you wondering if you are ever going to be able to go skiing again?

Time will tell - but I say a 30's style depression seems less likely without government intervention into the Banking sector. The cut in interest rates across Europe & US seems like a good start. We'll see.

Interestingly, my Barclays Capital Markets friend, Dave, is all talk of how to get the annual ski fix. He's now come to face facts that, on a non existent bonus, he'll be hard pressed to fund the annual £6,000 trip to Verbier.

Things have changed. Not long ago talking about Bansko and Bulgaria would not have cut the mustard across the dealing room floors. Nor would it impress his high maintenance girlfriends much. But that was then, and this is now. Its, the crash of '08 and its time for bankers to spend some of their own money.

All of a sudden, Bansko is looking like just the ticket to save cash. Dave would normally rely on at least one ski corporate weekend jolly - and possibly one lads weekend too. Now what? With sufficient money to choose locations, its really all about being cautious. Cautious means spending less in 2009.

Anyhow, for the first time, Dave is up for the boys trip in January to "give it a go". He's also rounding up five or six of his mates to join him for his first Eastern European ski adventure. My bet is we'll see a few more of him booking before the week is out.

What does this mean for Bansko? Well simply put:

THE SECRET OF CREDIT CRUNCH SKIING IS OUT!

Advance Bansko accommodation bookings are well up from last year. Direct flights are filling up fast. The problem will be a shortage of cheap flights. Many weekend flights will no longer be sub £150 - so the early bird catches the worm.

So for the City boys, I think its out with France, Switzerland ... Val D'Isere and Verbier and in with Bulgaria and Bansko.

Happy End Bar

With all this doom and gloom in the news today I thought it would be more in keeping to focus on the Happy End Bar.

This review conducted during my many visits last ski season.

The Happy End is the largest apres ski bar in Bansko. Its unmissable being situated virtually facing the gondola across the car park entrance road. A bizarre man in a chair lift dangles from a pole by the entrance.

Situated just 100 metres from Mountain Residence 3, and close to Bansko Royal Towers, Grand Montana and others its convenient for many staying near the gondola end of town.

Why The Happy End?

The good points start with its convenience, and nice wooden tables with lights on a weight and pulley counterbalance system that's sure to keep the kid in us amused for a minute or two as you play moving them up and down. Overall, a nice alpine and rustic vibe greets you.

Go there for apres ski drink but, unless you are not too fussed about food, probably best not to eat here. Although of course standard may improve in 08/09 season. The sache (mixed grill) is just ok but much better for less can be found.

Live Music

Best of all, however, are the Friday and Saturday night live bands. I have not been here when the band has not managed to get the placing rockin'. Mainly covers and a tendency to rock / popular. think Amy Winehouse, Rolling Stones, Guns and Roses, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Robbie Williams classics.

There are usually two or three bands that cover the whole ski season. The standard of musicianship was commented upon as being very high by my friend John, a professional guitarist friend.

Before the band, interval and after the sets, there is a DJ to keep things going.

Prices

Drinks prices can vary here. Be warned, I have witnessed a group get overcharged. Just best to have your wits about you but I've always been OK.

Needless to say prices are high for Bulgaria here - around 5 Lev (£2) for a large beer - but I cant now remember for sure. Bad points, well service can be average or worse, food is poor

You'll see both female and male cage dancers add to the visual treat, as well as a huge screen showing some stunning snowboard, skiing, speed paragliding and general extreme sports videos.

The male toilets always provoke comment with the interesting photographic murals above the urinals.

I have messed with the picture here, so as not to cause offence!

Overall Rating

Overall rating of the Happy End... on a Friday and Saturday night: 9/10. Other times 5/10.

There hasn't been a huge amount in the news this week to bring back the feel good factor. So I thought its time to do my bit to cheer up all those Bansko skiers. If you are looking to save as much money as possible this coming winter then read on.
